Abdullah bin Masud reported,

I was walking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ through a field in Medina while he was leaning on a palm-branch staff. We passed by a group of Jews, and some of them said to one another, "Ask him about the soul."Others said, "Do not ask him about the soul."But they went ahead and asked him. He stood leaning on the staff, with me behind him, and I thought he was receiving revelation. Then he recited, "They ask you about the soul. Say, the soul is from the affair of my Lord, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little" [Isra 17:85].Some of them said to the others, "We told you not to ask him."
