Jabir bin Abdullah reported,

We, the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, entered into ihram intending Hajj alone, without combining it with Umrah.Ata said, Jabir reported that the Prophet ﷺ arrived on the morning of the fourth of Dhul-Hijjah. When we arrived, the Prophet ﷺ commanded us to release ourselves from ihram. He said, "Release yourselves from ihram and be intimate with your wives."Ata said, Jabir explained that the Prophet did not make this obligatory upon them, but rather permitted intimacy with them. Then word reached him that we were saying, "When there are only five days between us and Arafah, he commands us to release ourselves and go to our wives, so that we will arrive at Arafah with our private parts dripping with semen."Jabir gestured with his hand, moving it in this manner as he spoke. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stood up and said, "You know that I am the most God-fearing, the most truthful, and the most righteous among you. Were it not for my sacrificial animal, I too would have released myself from ihram as you are doing. So release yourselves. Had I known earlier what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal."So we released ourselves from ihram, and we listened and obeyed.
