The Prophet ﷺ appointed Ibn al-Utbiyyah to collect the charity due from the tribe of Banu Sulaym. When he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and presented his accounts, he said, "This is what belongs to you, and this is a gift that was given to me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Why did you not sit in your father's house and your mother's house and see whether your gift would come to you, if you are truthful?"Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and addressed the people. He praised Allah and glorified Him, then said, "To proceed. I appoint Some men from among you over matters that Allah has placed under my authority, and one of them comes and says, 'This is for you, and this is a gift that was given to me.' Why did he not sit in his father's house and his mother's house and see whether his gift would come to him, if he were truthful? By Allah, none of you takes anything from it," Hisham said, "unjustly," "except that he will come on the Day of Resurrection carrying it. Let me not recognize any of you who comes before Allah carrying a camel that grunts, or a cow that lows, or a sheep that bleats."Then he raised his hands until I could see the whiteness of his armpits, and said, "Have I not conveyed the message?"
