He came to Umar during his caliphate, and Umar said to him, "Have I not been told that you take charge of certain public duties for the people, but when you are given the wages for your work, you refuse them?"I said, "Yes."Umar asked, "What do you intend by that?"I replied, "I have horses and slaves, and I am well off, so I want my wages to be charity for the Muslims."Umar said, "Do not do that, for I once wanted the same thing you want. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give me gifts, and I would say, 'Give it to someone more in need of it than I am,' until once he gave me a sum of wealth, and I said, 'Give it to someone more in need of it than I am.' The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Take it, keep it as your property, and give it away in charity. Whatever comes to you of this wealth without your craving for it or asking for it, take it, and what does not come this way, do not let your soul long after it.'"
حدثنا أبو اليمان أخبرنا شعيب عن الزهري أخبرني السائب بن يزيد ابن أخت نمر أن حويطب بن عبد العزى أخبره أن
أنه قدم على عمر في خلافته فقال له عمر ألم أحدث أنك تلي من أعمال الناس أعمالا فإذا أعطيت العمالة كرهتها فقلت بلى فقال عمر فما تريد إلى ذلك قلت إن لي أفراسا وأعبدا وأنا بخير وأريد أن تكون عمالتي صدقة على المسلمين قال عمر لا تفعل فإني كنت أردت الذي أردت فكان رسول الله ﷺ يعطيني العطاء فأقول أعطه أفقر إليه مني حتى أعطاني مرة مالا فقلت أعطه أفقر إليه مني فقال النبي ﷺ خذه فتموله وتصدق به فما جاءك من هذا المال وأنت غير مشرف ولا سائل فخذه وإلا فلا تتبعه نفسك
