While we were sitting with Umar, he asked, "Which of you remembers what the Prophet ﷺ said about fitnah?"Someone replied, "A man's trial is in his family, his property, his children, and his neighbor, and it is expiated by prayer, charity, enjoining good, and forbidding evil."Umar said, "That is not what I am asking about. I mean the fitnah that surges like the waves of the sea."He answered, "That one is no concern of yours, Commander of the Faithful. Between you and it there is a locked door."Umar asked, "Will the door be broken or opened?"He replied, "It will be broken."Umar said, "Then it will never be shut again."I said, "Yes."We asked Hudhayfah, "Did Umar know who the door was?"He said, "Yes, as surely as he knew that night comes before tomorrow. I had narrated to him a hadith free of any confusion."We were too apprehensive to ask Hudhayfah who the door was, so we instructed Masruq to ask him. He asked, "Who is the door?"Hudhayfah said, "Umar."
حدثنا عمر بن حفص بن غياث حدثنا أبي حدثنا الأعمش حدثنا شقيق سمعت
بينا نحن جلوس عند عمر إذ قال أيكم يحفظ قول النبي ﷺ في الفتنة قال فتنة الرجل في أهله وماله وولده وجاره تكفرها الصلاة والصدقة والأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر قال ليس عن هذا أسألك ولكن التي تموج كموج البحر قال ليس عليك منها بأس يا أمير المؤمنين إن بينك وبينها بابا مغلقا قال عمر أيكسر الباب أم يفتح قال بل يكسر قال عمر إذا لا يغلق أبدا قلت أجل قلنا لحذيفة أكان عمر يعلم الباب قال نعم كما يعلم أن دون غد ليلة وذلك أني حدثته حديثا ليس بالأغاليط فهبنا أن نسأله من الباب فأمرنا مسروقا فسأله فقال من الباب قال عمر
