A man came along driving two of his watering camels as night was falling, and he found Muaz leading the prayer. He left his camels and joined Muaz in prayer, but Muaz recited Surat al-Baqarah, or perhaps an-Nisa. So the man broke off, finished his prayer alone, and left.Word reached him that Muaz had spoken against him, so he went to the Prophet ﷺ and complained about Muaz.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Muaz, are you one who drives people away? Are you putting people to trial?" He repeated this three times. "Why did you not recite Sabbihisma Rabbika al-Ala, Wash-Shamsi wa Duhaha, and Wal-Layli idha Yaghsha? For behind you pray the elderly, the weak, and the one who has needs to attend to."I think this last phrase is part of the hadith.Abu Abdullah said, Saeed bin Masruq, Masaar, and Shaybani followed him in this narration. Amr, Ubaydullah bin Miqsam, and Abu Zubayr reported from Jabir that Muaz recited Surat al-Baqarah in the night prayer. Amash followed him in this narration from Muharib.
حدثنا آدم بن أبي إياس قال حدثنا شعبة قال حدثنا محارب بن دثار قال سمعت
أقبل رجل بناضحين وقد جنح الليل فوافق معاذا يصلي فترك ناضحه وأقبل إلى معاذ فقرأ بسورة البقرة أو النساء فانطلق الرجل وبلغه أن معاذا نال منه فأتى النبي ﷺ فشكا إليه معاذا فقال النبي ﷺ يا معاذ أفتان أنت أو أفاتن ثلاث مرار فلولا صليت بسبح اسم ربك والشمس وضحاها والليل إذا يغشى فإنه يصلي وراءك الكبير والضعيف وذو الحاجة أحسب هذا في الحديث قال أبو عبد الله وتابعه سعيد بن مسروق ومسعر والشيباني قال عمرو وعبيد الله بن مقسم وأبو الزبير عن جابر قرأ معاذ في العشاء بالبقرة وتابعه الأعمش عن محارب
