Abu Abdul-Rahman and Habban bin Atiya had a dispute, and Abu Abdul-Rahman said to Habban, "You know full well what emboldened your companion to shed blood," meaning Ali.Habban replied, "What is it, may you have no father?"Abu Abdul-Rahman said, "Something I heard him say."Habban asked, "What was it?"He said, Ali reported, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me, Zubayr, and Abu Marthad, all of us mounted horsemen. He said, 'Go until you reach Rawdat Hajj.'" Abu Salama noted that this is how Abu Awana said it, "Hajj." "'There you will find a woman carrying a letter from Hatib bin Abu Balta to the polytheists. Bring it to me.'So we set off on our horses until we caught up with her at the very place the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had described. She was traveling on a camel of hers. He had written to the people of Makkah informing them of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ march against them.We said, 'Where is the letter you have with you?'She replied, 'I have no letter with me.'We made her camel kneel and searched through her belongings, but found nothing. My two companions said, 'We see no letter with her.'I said, 'We know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has not lied.' Then Ali swore, 'By the One we swear by, you will produce the letter or I will strip you bare.' At that she reached for the waist of her garment, for she had a cloak wrapped around her waist, and pulled out the document. They brought it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, he has betrayed Allah, His Messenger, and the believers. Let me strike off his head."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Hatib, what made you do what you did?"Hatib replied, "Messenger of Allah, why should I not be a believer in Allah and His Messenger? But I wanted to have some favor with these people through which Allah might protect my family and property. Every one of your companions has someone there from his own tribe through whom Allah protects his family and property, but I have no one."The Prophet ﷺ said, "He has spoken the truth. Say nothing but good about him."Umar repeated, "Messenger of Allah, he has betrayed Allah, His Messenger, and the believers. Let me strike off his head."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Is he not one of the men of Badr? How do you know? Perhaps Allah has looked upon them and said, 'Do as you wish, for I have made Paradise obligatory for you.'"At that, Umar's eyes filled with tears, and he said, "Allah and His Messenger know best."Abu Abdullah said, "Khakh" is more correct, but this is how Abu Awana said it, "Hajj." "Hajj" is a misreading. It is a place name. Hushaym used to say, "Khakh."
