Saaib bin Yazid reported,

During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, throughout the rule of Abu Bakr, and during the early part of Umar's caliphate, drunkards would be brought to us and we would strike them with our hands, our sandals, and our cloaks. Toward the end of Umar's rule, he set the punishment at forty lashes, and when people grew defiant and openly transgressed, he raised it to eighty lashes.
