Ibn Abbas delivered a sermon to us on a muddy day. When the muezzin reached the words "Come to prayer," Ibn Abbas instructed him to say instead, "Pray in your dwellings." The people looked at one another as if they disapproved.So he said, "It seems you find this strange. Yet someone better than me did exactly this," meaning the Prophet ﷺ. "The Friday prayer is an obligation, and I disliked putting you to hardship."Hammad reported from Asim, from Abdullah bin Harith, from Ibn Abbas a similar narration, except that he said, "I disliked causing you to sin by coming here wading through mud up to your knees."

خطبنا ابن عباس في يوم ذي ردغ فأمر المؤذن لما بلغ حي على الصلاة قال قل الصلاة في الرحال فنظر بعضهم إلى بعض فكأنهم أنكروا فقال كأنكم أنكرتم هذا إن هذا فعله من هو خير مني يعني النبي ﷺ إنها عزمة وإني كرهت أن أحرجكم وعن حماد عن عاصم عن عبد الله بن الحارث عن ابن عباس نحوه غير أنه قال كرهت أن أؤثمكم فتجيئون تدوسون الطين إلى ركبكم
