Abdullah bin Masud reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever swears a deliberate oath in order to seize the property of a Muslim by it will meet Allah with Allah angry at him." Then Allah sent down confirmation of this, "Indeed, those who trade away Allah's covenant and their oaths for a small price" [Al Imran 3:77], to the end of the verse. Then Ashath bin Qays came in and asked, "What has Abu Abdul-Rahman been telling you?"They said, "Such and such."Ashath said, "It was about me that this verse was revealed. I had a well on land belonging to a cousin of mine, so I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.He said, "Your evidence, or his oath."I said, "Then he will simply swear to it, Messenger of Allah."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Whoever swears a deliberate oath, lying in it, in order to seize the property of a Muslim by it will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection with Allah angry at him."
