The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us two narrations. I have witnessed one of them, and I am waiting for the other.He told us that trustworthiness was sent down into the very root of men's hearts, then they learned it from the Quran, then they learned it from the Sunnah.And he told us about its removal, saying, "A man will sleep a sleep, and trustworthiness will be drawn out of his heart, leaving behind a trace like a faint mark. Then he will sleep another sleep, and it will be drawn out, leaving behind a trace like a blister, like an ember you roll onto your foot which raises a swelling. You see it puffed up, but there is nothing inside it."Then people will carry on their dealings, and scarcely anyone will fulfill a trust, until it will be said, "Among the tribe of so-and-so there is a trustworthy man." And it will be said of a man, "How sensible he is, how refined, how strong-willed," yet there is not in his heart even the weight of a mustard seed of faith.A time came upon me when I did not care which of you I dealt with. If he was a Muslim, his Islam would compel him to deal honestly with me, and if he was a Christian, the one in authority over him would compel him to do so. But today, I would not deal with anyone except so-and-so and so-and-so.Al-Firabri said, Abu Jafar said, I related this to Abu Abdullah, and he said, I heard Ahmad bin Asim say, I heard Abu Ubayd say, al-Asmai, Abu Amr, and others said, "The 'jadhr' of men's hearts means the root or foundation of a thing. The 'wakt' is a slight trace of something. The 'majl' is the mark left on the palm from labor when it becomes calloused."
حدثنا محمد بن كثير أخبرنا سفيان حدثنا الأعمش عن زيد بن وهب حدثنا
حدثنا رسول الله ﷺ حديثين رأيت أحدهما وأنا أنتظر الآخر حدثنا أن الأمانة نزلت في جذر قلوب الرجال ثم علموا من القرآن ثم علموا من السنة وحدثنا عن رفعها قال ينام الرجل النومة فتقبض الأمانة من قلبه فيظل أثرها مثل أثر الوكت ثم ينام النومة فتقبض فيبقى أثرها مثل المجل كجمر دحرجته على رجلك فنفط فتراه منتبرا وليس فيه شيء فيصبح الناس يتبايعون فلا يكاد أحد يؤدي الأمانة فيقال إن في بني فلان رجلا أمينا ويقال للرجل ما أعقله وما أظرفه وما أجلده وما في قلبه مثقال حبة خردل من إيمان ولقد أتى علي زمان وما أبالي أيكم بايعت لئن كان مسلما رده علي الإسلام وإن كان نصرانيا رده علي ساعيه فأما اليوم فما كنت أبايع إلا فلانا وفلانا قال الفربري قال أبو جعفر حدثت أبا عبد الله فقال سمعت أحمد بن عاصم يقول سمعت أبا عبيد يقول قال الأصمعي وأبو عمرو وغيرهما جذر قلوب الرجال الجذر الأصل من كل شىء، والوكت أثر الشىء اليسير منه، والمجل أثر العمل في الكف إذا غلظ.
