The Prophet ﷺ used to prefer agreeing with the People of the Book in matters concerning which he had not been given any specific instruction. The People of the Book would let their hair fall straight down, while the polytheists would part their hair. So the Prophet ﷺ let his forelock fall straight, but later he parted it.
