I waited for a whole year wanting to ask Umar about the two women who had banded together against the Prophet ﷺ, but I felt too much awe of him to do so. One day he stopped at a resting place and went among the arak trees to relieve himself. When he came out, I asked him.He said, "It was Ayesha and Hafsa."Then he said, "In the days of ignorance we did not count women as anything. When Islam came and Allah mentioned them, we recognized that they had rights over us, but without letting them into any of our affairs.There was once a quarrel between me and my wife, and she answered me harshly. I said to her, 'Are you really one to do this?'She replied, 'You say this to me, while your own daughter hurts the Prophet ﷺ?'So I went to Hafsa and said to her, 'I warn you against disobeying Allah and His Messenger.' I rebuked her about hurting him.Then I went to Umm Salama and spoke to her, but she said, 'I am amazed at you, Umar. You have already intruded into our affairs, and now nothing is left except that you should come between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his wives.' She rebuffed me.There was a man from the Ansar who, whenever he was absent from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while I was present, I would bring him news of what happened, and whenever I was absent and he was present, he would bring me news of what happened with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. At that time everyone around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had submitted to him, and only the king of Ghassan in Syria remained, and we feared he might march against us.I was caught off guard when the Ansari came saying, 'Something has happened.'I asked him, 'What is it? Has the Ghassanid come?'He said, 'Greater than that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has divorced his wives.'So I came, and weeping was rising from every one of their chambers. The Prophet ﷺ had withdrawn to an upper room of his, and at the door of the room was a young servant. I went up to him and said, 'Ask permission for me.' He gave me permission and I entered.There was the Prophet ﷺ lying on a reed mat that had left marks on his side, with a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibers under his head. Some hides were hanging on the wall along with tanning leaves. I told him what I had said to Hafsa and to Umm Salama, and how Umm Salama had answered me back, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed.He stayed away for twenty-nine nights, then he came down."

لبثت سنة وأنا أريد أن أسأل عمر عن المرأتين اللتين تظاهرتا على النبي ﷺ فجعلت أهابه فنزل يوما منزلا فدخل الأراك فلما خرج سألته فقال عائشة وحفصة ثم قال كنا في الجاهلية لا نعد النساء شيئا فلما جاء الإسلام وذكرهن الله رأينا لهن بذلك علينا حقا من غير أن ندخلهن في شيء من أمورنا وكان بيني وبين امرأتي كلام فأغلظت لي فقلت لها وإنك لهناك قالت تقول هذا لي وابنتك تؤذي النبي ﷺ فأتيت حفصة فقلت لها إني أحذرك أن تعصي الله ورسوله وتقدمت إليها في أذاه فأتيت أم سلمة فقلت لها فقالت أعجب منك يا عمر قد دخلت في أمورنا فلم يبق إلا أن تدخل بين رسول الله ﷺ وأزواجه فرددت وكان رجل من الأنصار إذا غاب عن رسول الله ﷺ وشهدته أتيته بما يكون وإذا غبت عن رسول الله ﷺ وشهد أتاني بما يكون من رسول الله ﷺ وكان من حول رسول الله ﷺ قد استقام له فلم يبق إلا ملك غسان بالشأم كنا نخاف أن يأتينا فما شعرت إلا بالأنصاري وهو يقول إنه قد حدث أمر قلت له وما هو أجاء الغساني قال أعظم من ذاك طلق رسول الله ﷺ نساءه فجئت فإذا البكاء من حجرهن كلها وإذا النبي ﷺ قد صعد في مشربة له وعلى باب المشربة وصيف فأتيته فقلت استأذن لي فأذن لي فدخلت فإذا النبي ﷺ على حصير قد أثر في جنبه وتحت رأسه مرفقة من أدم حشوها ليف وإذا أهب معلقة وقرظ فذكرت الذي قلت لحفصة وأم سلمة والذي ردت علي أم سلمة فضحك رسول الله ﷺ فلبث تسعا وعشرين ليلة ثم نزل
