The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave a parable of the miser and the charitable giver, comparing them to two men wearing iron coats of mail, with their hands forced up against their breasts and collarbones. Whenever the charitable one gave in charity, his coat would expand and stretch out until it covered his fingertips and erased his footprints. But whenever the miser intended to give in charity, his coat would contract, with every ring clinging to its place.Abu Hurairah said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gesturing with his finger like this into his collar. If you had seen him trying to widen it, it would not widen."Ibn Tawus followed this narration from his father, and Abu Zinad from Araj, mentioning the two coats of mail. Hanzala said, "I heard Tawsa say, I heard Abu Hurairah say, 'Two coats of mail.'" Jafar bin Hayyan also reported from Araj, "Two coats of mail."
حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد حدثنا أبو عامر حدثنا إبراهيم بن نافع عن الحسن عن طاوس
ضرب رسول الله ﷺ مثل البخيل والمتصدق كمثل رجلين عليهما جبتان من حديد قد اضطرت أيديهما إلى ثديهما وتراقيهما فجعل المتصدق كلما تصدق بصدقة انبسطت عنه حتى تغشى أنامله وتعفو أثره وجعل البخيل كلما هم بصدقة قلصت وأخذت كل حلقة بمكانها قال أبو هريرة فأنا رأيت رسول الله ﷺ يقول بإصبعه هكذا في جيبه فلو رأيته يوسعها ولا تتوسع تابعه ابن طاوس عن أبيه وأبو الزناد عن الأعرج في الجبتين وقال حنظلة سمعت طاوسا سمعت أبا هريرة يقول جبتان وقال جعفر بن حيان عن الأعرج جبتان
