The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was bewitched by a man from Banu Zurayq named Labid bin al-Asam, to the point that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would imagine he had done something when he had not done it.Then one day, or one night, while he was with me, he prayed and prayed again, then said, "Ayesha, do you realize that Allah has answered me about the matter I asked Him about? Two men came to me. One sat at my head and the other at my feet."One of them asked his companion, "What is wrong with this man?"The other replied, "He has been bewitched."He asked, "Who bewitched him?"He said, "Labid bin al-Asam."He asked, "With what?"He said, "With a comb, hair from combing, and the sheath of a male date-palm spadix."He asked, "Where is it?"He said, "In the well of Dharwan."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to the well with some of his companions. When he returned, he said, "Ayesha, its water looked as if it were steeped with henna, and its palm trees looked like the heads of devils."I said, "Messenger of Allah, why did you not take it out?"He replied, "Allah has cured me, and I disliked stirring up evil among the people because of it." So he ordered the well to be filled in, and it was buried.Abu Usama, Abu Damra, and Ibn Abu Zinad followed the same chain from Hisham. Layth and Ibn Uyayna reported it from Hisham with the wording, "in a comb and tow." It is said that mushata refers to what comes out of the hair when it is combed, while mushaqa is from the tow of flax.
حدثنا إبراهيم بن موسى أخبرنا عيسى بن يونس عن هشام عن أبيه
سحر رسول الله ﷺ رجل من بني زريق يقال له لبيد بن الأعصم حتى كان رسول الله ﷺ يخيل إليه أنه كان يفعل الشيء وما فعله حتى إذا كان ذات يوم أو ذات ليلة وهو عندي لكنه دعا ودعا ثم قال يا عائشة أشعرت أن الله أفتاني فيما استفتيته فيه أتاني رجلان فقعد أحدهما عند رأسي والآخر عند رجلي فقال أحدهما لصاحبه ما وجع الرجل فقال مطبوب قال من طبه قال لبيد بن الأعصم قال في أي شيء قال في مشط ومشاطة وجف طلع نخلة ذكر قال وأين هو قال في بئر ذروان فأتاها رسول الله ﷺ في ناس من أصحابه فجاء فقال يا عائشة كأن ماءها نقاعة الحناء أو كأن رءوس نخلها رءوس الشياطين قلت يا رسول الله أفلا استخرجته قال قد عافاني الله فكرهت أن أثور على الناس فيه شرا فأمر بها فدفنت تابعه أبو أسامة وأبو ضمرة وابن أبي الزناد عن هشام وقال الليث وابن عيينة عن هشام في مشط ومشاقة يقال المشاطة ما يخرج من الشعر إذا مشط والمشاقة من مشاقة الكتان
