We were with the Prophet ﷺ at Dhul-Hulayfah, and the people grew hungry. We obtained some camels and sheep, and the Prophet ﷺ was at the rear of the group. The people hastened and set up their cooking pots. The Prophet ﷺ came up to them and ordered that the pots be overturned.Then he divided the spoils, considering ten sheep equal to one camel. One of the camels bolted, and there were only a few horses among the people. They pursued it but it exhausted them. A man took aim at it with an arrow, and Allah caused it to be held still.The Prophet ﷺ said, "These animals have wild tendencies like the tendencies of wild beasts. So whatever bolts from you among them, do with it as this man did."My grandfather said, "We are hoping, or fearing, that we will meet the enemy tomorrow, and we have no knives. Can we slaughter with reeds?"He replied, "Whatever causes the blood to flow, and the name of Allah has been mentioned over it, then eat from it. But not with a tooth or a claw, and I will tell you why. As for the tooth, it is a bone, and as for the claw, it is the knife of the Abyssinians."
حدثني موسى بن إسماعيل حدثنا أبو عوانة عن سعيد بن مسروق عن عباية بن رفاعة بن رافع
كنا مع النبي ﷺ بذي الحليفة فأصاب الناس جوع فأصبنا إبلا وغنما وكان النبي ﷺ في أخريات الناس فعجلوا فنصبوا القدور فدفع إليهم النبي ﷺ فأمر بالقدور فأكفئت ثم قسم فعدل عشرة من الغنم ببعير فند منها بعير وكان في القوم خيل يسيرة فطلبوه فأعياهم فأهوى إليه رجل بسهم فحبسه الله فقال النبي ﷺ إن لهذه البهائم أوابد كأوابد الوحش فما ند عليكم منها فاصنعوا به هكذا قال وقال جدي إنا لنرجو أو نخاف أن نلقى العدو غدا وليس معنا مدى أفنذبح بالقصب فقال ما أنهر الدم وذكر اسم الله عليه فكل ليس السن والظفر وسأخبركم عنه أما السن فعظم وأما الظفر فمدى الحبشة
