I used to keep close to the Prophet ﷺ just to fill my stomach, at a time when I ate no leavened bread, wore no silk, and had no man or woman to serve me. I would press my belly against the pebbles from hunger, and I would ask a man to recite a verse to me, though I already knew it, hoping he would take me home with him and feed me.The best of people to the poor was Jafar bin Ubayy Talib. He would take us home and feed us whatever was in his house. Sometimes he would bring out to us a butter-skin that had nothing left in it, so we would split it open and lick what remained inside.

كنت ألزم النبي ﷺ لشبع بطني حين لا آكل الخمير ولا ألبس الحرير ولا يخدمني فلان ولا فلانة وألصق بطني بالحصباء وأستقرئ الرجل الآية وهي معي كي ينقلب بي فيطعمني وخير الناس للمساكين جعفر بن أبي طالب ينقلب بنا فيطعمنا ما كان في بيته حتى إن كان ليخرج إلينا العكة ليس فيها شيء فنشتقها فنلعق ما فيها
