Bukhari 5377

Bukhari reported, through Abdullah bin Yusuf, from Malik, from Wahb bin Kaysan, that food was brought to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while his stepson Umar bin Abu Salama was with him, and he said, "In the name of Allah, and eat from what is nearest to you."He said, Malik transmitted this hadith in mursal form in the Muwatta, and Khalid bin Mukhlad and Yahya bin Salih connected it from him with a continuous chain, and it is sahih and connected. Walid bin Kathir and Muhammad bin Amr bin Halhala also narrated it from Wahb bin Kaysan from Umar bin Abu Salama, in the same manner as the narration of Khalid and Yahya from Malik. Bukhari reported it, except for the hadith of the one who connected it from Malik.

Hafiz said in Fath, Bukhari only permitted himself to include it, even though the preserved version from Malik has it as a mursal narration, because it became clear through the preceding route that Wahb bin Kaysan's hearing from Umar bin Abu Salama was sound. This indicates that Malik shortened his chain by not stating explicitly that it was connected, though it is in fact connected in origin. Perhaps he connected it on one occasion, and this was preserved from him by Khalid and Yahya bin Salih, both of whom are reliable. Daraqutni included this narration from both of them in al-Ghara'ib, while Ibn Abdul-Barr in al-Tamhid confined himself to mentioning only the narration of Khalid bin Mukhlad.
