He related that when Hafsah became widowed, Umar said, "I met Abu Bakr and said to him, 'If you wish, I will marry Hafsah bint Umar to you.' Several nights passed, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her. Later Abu Bakr met me and said, 'Nothing prevented me from responding to what you offered me except that I knew the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had mentioned her. I would not disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Had he left her, I would have accepted.'"Yunus, Musa bin Uqba, and Ibn Abu Atiq corroborated this from Zuhri.
حدثنا أبو اليمان أخبرنا شعيب عن الزهري قال أخبرني سالم بن عبد الله أنه سمع
يحدث أن عمر بن الخطاب حين تأيمت حفصة قال عمر لقيت أبا بكر فقلت إن شئت أنكحتك حفصة بنت عمر فلبثت ليالي ثم خطبها رسول الله ﷺ فلقيني أبو بكر فقال إنه لم يمنعني أن أرجع إليك فيما عرضت إلا أني قد علمت أن رسول الله ﷺ قد ذكرها فلم أكن لأفشي سر رسول الله ﷺ ولو تركها لقبلتها تابعه يونس وموسى بن عقبة وابن أبي عتيق عن الزهري
