Mujahid reported,

Ibn Abbas said regarding "in what you hint at" [Baqarah 2:235] that a man may say, "I wish to marry, and I would love it if a righteous woman were made available to me."Qasim said he may say, "You are a woman of noble character, I have an interest in you, and Allah will surely bring you good," or something similar.Ata said he hints at it without stating it openly. He says, "I have a need," and "Take heart, you are, praise be to Allah, much sought after." She may reply, "I hear what you say," but she must not promise anything, nor may her guardian make a promise on her behalf without her knowledge. If she does make a promise to a man during her waiting period and he then marries her afterward, they are not separated.Hasan said that "do not make them a secret promise" [Baqarah 2:235] refers to fornication.It is reported from Ibn Abbas that "the prescribed term reaches its end" [Baqarah 2:235] means the waiting period comes to an end.

وقال لي طلق حدثنا زائدة، عن منصور،

عن ابن عباس، {فيما عرضتم} يقول إني أريد التزويج، ولوددت أنه تيسر لي امرأة صالحة. وقال القاسم يقول إنك على كريمة، وإني فيك لراغب، وإن الله لسائق إليك خيرا. أو نحو هذا. وقال عطاء يعرض ولا يبوح يقول إن لي حاجة وأبشري، وأنت بحمد الله نافقة. وتقول هي قد أسمع ما تقول. ولا تعد شيئا ولا يواعد وليها بغير علمها، وإن واعدت رجلا في عدتها ثم نكحها بعد لم يفرق بينهما. وقال الحسن {لا تواعدوهن سرا} الزنا. ويذكر عن ابن عباس {الكتاب أجله} تنقضي العدة.
