Zirr reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was traveling on one of his journeys, and Umar bin Khattab was riding alongside him at night. Umar asked him about something, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not answer him. He asked again, and again received no reply. He asked a third time, and still the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not respond.Umar said to himself, "May your mother lose you, Umar. You have pressed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ three times, and each time he did not answer you."Umar continued, "So I urged my camel forward until I was ahead of the people, fearing that something might be revealed in the Quran concerning me. It was not long before I heard someone calling out to me. I said to myself, 'I feared that something had been revealed about me in the Quran.' So I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greeted him."He said, "There has been revealed to me tonight a surah more beloved to me than anything over which the sun rises." Then he recited, "Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory" [Fath 48:1].
حدثنا إسماعيل قال حدثني مالك
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يسير في بعض أسفاره وعمر بن الخطاب يسير معه ليلا فسأله عمر عن شيء فلم يجبه رسول الله ﷺ ثم سأله فلم يجبه ثم سأله فلم يجبه فقال عمر ثكلتك أمك نزرت رسول الله ﷺ ثلاث مرات كل ذلك لا يجيبك قال عمر فحركت بعيري حتى كنت أمام الناس وخشيت أن ينزل في قرآن فما نشبت أن سمعت صارخا يصرخ بي قال فقلت لقد خشيت أن يكون نزل في قرآن قال فجئت رسول الله ﷺ فسلمت عليه فقال لقد أنزلت علي الليلة سورة لهي أحب إلي مما طلعت عليه الشمس ثم قرأ إنا فتحنا لك فتحا مبينا
Bukhari reported it, from Tanai, Ibn Yusuf, and Ismail, from Malik, from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, was traveling with Umar when this was revealed, "Indeed, We have granted you victory" [Fath 48:1], with a chain lacking the companion link. Qarad, Ibn Atamah, Yazid bin Abu Hakeem, and Harini connected it with a complete chain.
The Hafiz said in Fath al-Bari, page 583, volume... (Tabarani in Saghir, Awsat), this wording appears to be mursal, because Aslam did not witness the time of this story, but it is understood that he heard it from Umar, based on his statement in the middle of it, "Umar said, so I moved my camel," to the end. This is what Qabisi pointed to.It has also come through another route with "I heard Umar." Bazzar reported it through the route of Muhammad bin Khalid bin Uthmah, from Malik, then he said, "We do not know of anyone who narrated it from Malik in this manner except Ibn Uthmah and Ibn Ghazwan."
