The companions of Abdullah came to Abu Darda. He sought them out, found them, and asked, "Which of you recites according to Abdullah's recitation?"They replied, "All of us."He asked, "Which of you has memorized it best?"They pointed to Alqama.He asked Alqama, "How did you hear him recite "By the night when it covers" [Layl 92:1]?"Alqama said, "And the male and the female."Abu Darda said, "I bear witness that I heard the Prophet ﷺ recite it just like that, but these people want me to recite "And by Him who created the male and the female" [Layl 92:3]. By Allah, I will not follow them."
حدثنا عمر بن حفص حدثنا أبي حدثنا الأعمش
قدم أصحاب عبد الله على أبي الدرداء فطلبهم فوجدهم فقال أيكم يقرأ على قراءة عبد الله قال كلنا قال فأيكم أحفظ فأشاروا إلى علقمة قال كيف سمعته يقرأ {والليل إذا يغشى} قال علقمة والذكر والأنثى قال أشهد أني سمعت النبي ﷺ يقرأ هكذا وهؤلاء يريدوني على أن أقرأ {وما خلق الذكر والأنثى} والله لا أتابعهم
