I heard the Prophet ﷺ speaking about the period when revelation had paused, and he said in his account, "As I was walking along, I suddenly heard a voice from the sky. I raised my head, and there was the angel who had come to me at Hira, seated on a throne between the sky and the earth. I was seized with terror because of him, so I returned home and said, 'Wrap me up, wrap me up.' So they covered me with a cloak, and Allah Almighty revealed, 'You who are wrapped in a cloak' through to 'and shun all filth' [Muddaththir 74:1–5]." This was before prayer was made obligatory, and the filth refers to the idols.

سمعت النبي ﷺ وهو يحدث عن فترة الوحي فقال في حديثه فبينا أنا أمشي إذ سمعت صوتا من السماء فرفعت رأسي فإذا الملك الذي جاءني بحراء جالس على كرسي بين السماء والأرض فجئثت منه رعبا فرجعت فقلت زملوني زملوني فدثروني فأنزل الله تعالى {يا أيها المدثر} إلى {والرجز فاهجر} قبل أن تفرض الصلاة وهي الأوثان
