For an entire year I had wanted to ask Umar bin Khattab about a verse, but I could not bring myself to ask him out of awe for him, until he set out for Hajj and I went with him. On our return, while we were on part of the road, he turned aside toward an arak tree to relieve himself.I waited for him until he was finished, then walked along with him and said, "Commander of the Believers, who were the two of the Prophet's ﷺ wives who supported one another against him?"He answered, "That was Hafsa and Ayesha."I said, "By Allah, I have wanted to ask you about this for a year, but I could not, out of awe for you."He said, "Do not do that. Whatever you suppose I have knowledge of, ask me, and if I know it, I will inform you."Then Umar said, "By Allah, in the days of ignorance we gave no consideration to women at all, until Allah revealed concerning them what He revealed and apportioned for them what He apportioned.One day I was occupied with some matter I was deciding when my wife said, 'Why don't you do such and such?'I said to her, 'What business is this of yours? Why are you concerning yourself with a matter I am deciding?'She said to me, 'How strange of you, son of Khattab. You do not want to be answered back, yet your daughter answers back the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he spends his day angry.'So Umar got up, took his cloak right then, and went in to see Hafsa. He said to her, 'Daughter, do you really answer back the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he spends his day angry?'Hafsa said, 'By Allah, we do answer him back.'I said, 'You know that I warn you against Allah's punishment and the anger of His Messenger ﷺ. Daughter, do not be deceived by this woman whose beauty pleases her and whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loves.' He meant Ayesha.Then I went out and called on Umm Salama, since I was related to her, and spoke with her. Umm Salama said, 'How strange of you, son of Khattab. You have gotten involved in everything, and now you seek to come between the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his wives.' By Allah, she rebuked me so sharply that she broke down some of the resolve I had felt.I left her, and I had a companion from the Ansar. Whenever I was away, he would bring me the news, and whenever he was away, I would bring him the news. At that time we feared a certain king of Ghassan. We had been told that he intended to march against us, and our hearts were filled with worry over him.Suddenly my Ansari companion was knocking at the door, calling, 'Open up, open up!'I said, 'Has the Ghassani come?'He said, 'No, something even more serious. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has separated from his wives.'I said, 'May the noses of Hafsa and Ayesha be rubbed in the dust!' Then I took my garment and went out until I came to him, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in an upper room of his that one climbed to by means of a beam, with a black servant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the top of the steps.I said to him, 'Tell him this is Umar bin Khattab.' He gave me permission to enter."Umar continued, "I recounted this whole story to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When I reached the part about Umm Salama, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled. He was lying on a mat with nothing between him and it, with a leather pillow stuffed with palm fiber under his head. By his feet was some tanning leaves heaped up, and by his head were hides hanging. I saw the marks of the mat on his side and wept.He asked, 'What makes you weep?'I said, 'Messenger of Allah, Khosrau and Caesar are in the luxury they enjoy, while you are the Messenger of Allah.'He replied, 'Are you not content that they should have this world and we should have the Hereafter?'"
حدثنا عبد العزيز بن عبد الله حدثنا سليمان بن بلال عن يحيى عن عبيد بن حنين أنه سمع
مكثت سنة أريد أن أسأل عمر بن الخطاب عن آية فما أستطيع أن أسأله هيبة له حتى خرج حاجا فخرجت معه فلما رجعنا وكنا ببعض الطريق عدل إلى الأراك لحاجة له قال فوقفت له حتى فرغ ثم سرت معه فقلت يا أمير المؤمنين من اللتان تظاهرتا على النبي ﷺ من أزواجه فقال تلك حفصة وعائشة قال فقلت والله إن كنت لأريد أن أسألك عن هذا منذ سنة فما أستطيع هيبة لك قال فلا تفعل ما ظننت أن عندي من علم فاسألني فإن كان لي علم خبرتك به قال ثم قال عمر والله إن كنا في الجاهلية ما نعد للنساء أمرا حتى أنزل الله فيهن ما أنزل وقسم لهن ما قسم قال فبينا أنا في أمر أتأمره إذ قالت امرأتي لو صنعت كذا وكذا قال فقلت لها ما لك ولما ها هنا وفيم تكلفك في أمر أريده فقالت لي عجبا لك يا ابن الخطاب ما تريد أن تراجع أنت وإن ابنتك لتراجع رسول الله ﷺ حتى يظل يومه غضبان فقام عمر فأخذ رداءه مكانه حتى دخل على حفصة فقال لها يا بنية إنك لتراجعين رسول الله ﷺ حتى يظل يومه غضبان فقالت حفصة والله إنا لنراجعه فقلت تعلمين أني أحذرك عقوبة الله وغضب رسوله ﷺ يا بنية لا يغرنك هذه التي أعجبها حسنها حب رسول الله ﷺ إياها يريد عائشة قال ثم خرجت حتى دخلت على أم سلمة لقرابتي منها فكلمتها فقالت أم سلمة عجبا لك يا ابن الخطاب دخلت في كل شيء حتى تبتغي أن تدخل بين رسول الله ﷺ وأزواجه فأخذتني والله أخذا كسرتني عن بعض ما كنت أجد فخرجت من عندها وكان لي صاحب من الأنصار إذا غبت أتاني بالخبر وإذا غاب كنت أنا آتيه بالخبر ونحن نتخوف ملكا من ملوك غسان ذكر لنا أنه يريد أن يسير إلينا فقد امتلأت صدورنا منه فإذا صاحبي الأنصاري يدق الباب فقال افتح افتح فقلت جاء الغساني فقال بل أشد من ذلك اعتزل رسول الله ﷺ أزواجه فقلت رغم أنف حفصة وعائشة فأخذت ثوبي فأخرج حتى جئت فإذا رسول الله ﷺ في مشربة له يرقى عليها بعجلة وغلام لرسول الله ﷺ أسود على رأس الدرجة فقلت له قل هذا عمر بن الخطاب فأذن لي قال عمر فقصصت على رسول الله ﷺ هذا الحديث فلما بلغت حديث أم سلمة تبسم رسول الله ﷺ وإنه لعلى حصير ما بينه وبينه شيء وتحت رأسه وسادة من أدم حشوها ليف وإن عند رجليه قرظا مصبوبا وعند رأسه أهب معلقة فرأيت أثر الحصير في جنبه فبكيت فقال ما يبكيك فقلت يا رسول الله إن كسرى وقيصر فيما هما فيه وأنت رسول الله فقال أما ترضى أن تكون لهم الدنيا ولنا الآخرة
