I came to Abu Waail to ask him a question, and he said, "We were at Siffin when a man said, 'Do you not see those who are being called to the Book of Allah?'Ali replied, 'Yes.'Then Sahl bin Hunayf said, 'Distrust your own opinions. I saw us on the day of Hudaybiyah,' meaning the treaty that took place between the Prophet ﷺ and the polytheists, 'and had we seen a chance to fight, we would have fought.'Then Umar came and said, 'Are we not upon the truth and they upon falsehood? Are not those of us who are killed in Paradise and those of them who are killed in the Fire?'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Yes indeed.'Umar said, 'Then why should we accept humiliation in our religion and turn back when Allah has not yet judged between us?'He replied, 'Son of Khattab, I am the Messenger of Allah, and Allah will never forsake me.'Umar went away angry and could not contain himself until he came to Abu Bakr and said, 'Abu Bakr, are we not upon the truth and they upon falsehood?'Abu Bakr said, 'Son of Khattab, he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Allah will never forsake him.'Then Surah al-Fath was revealed."

أتيت أبا وائل أسأله فقال كنا بصفين فقال رجل ألم تر إلى الذين يدعون إلى كتاب الله فقال علي نعم فقال سهل بن حنيف اتهموا أنفسكم فلقد رأيتنا يوم الحديبية يعني الصلح الذي كان بين النبي ﷺ والمشركين ولو نرى قتالا لقاتلنا فجاء عمر فقال ألسنا على الحق وهم على الباطل أليس قتلانا في الجنة وقتلاهم في النار قال بلى قال ففيم نعطي الدنية في ديننا ونرجع ولما يحكم الله بيننا فقال يا ابن الخطاب إني رسول الله ولن يضيعني الله أبدا فرجع متغيظا فلم يصبر حتى جاء أبا بكر فقال يا أبا بكر ألسنا على الحق وهم على الباطل قال يا ابن الخطاب إنه رسول الله ﷺ ولن يضيعه الله أبدا فنزلت سورة الفتح
