Masruq reported,

While a man was speaking in Kindah, he said, "On the Day of Resurrection a smoke will come and seize the hearing and sight of the hypocrites, while it will affect the believer like a head cold."We were alarmed, so I went to Ibn Masud, who was reclining. He became angry and sat up, then said, "Whoever has knowledge, let him speak, and whoever does not know, let him say, 'Allah knows best,' for it is part of knowledge that one say of what he does not know, 'I do not know.' Allah said to His Prophet ﷺ, 'Say, I do not ask you for any reward for it, nor am I of those who pretend' [Sad 38:86]."Quraysh held back from accepting Islam, so the Prophet ﷺ supplicated against them, saying, 'O Allah, help me against them with seven years like the seven years of Yusuf.' So a famine struck them until they perished and ate carrion and bones, and a man would look between the sky and the earth and see something like smoke."Abu Sufyan came to him and said, 'Muhammad, you came commanding us to maintain ties of kinship, and your people have perished, so pray to Allah for them.' So he recited, 'Then watch for the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke,' up to His words, 'you will return' [Dukhan 44:10–15]."But will the punishment of the Hereafter be removed from them when it comes? They returned to their disbelief, and that is the meaning of His statement, 'The day We will strike with the great assault' [Dukhan 44:16], which refers to the day of Badr. And 'inevitable' [Furqan 25:77] also refers to the day of Badr. As for 'Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated,' up to 'they will be victorious' [Rum 30:1–3], the matter of the Romans has already passed."
