He used to swear an oath that this verse, "These are two adversaries who have disputed concerning their Lord" [Hajj 22:19], was revealed concerning Hamza and his two companions and Utbah and his two companions on the day they came forth at Badr.Sufyan narrated it from Abu Hashim. Uthman reported it from Jareer, from Mansur, from Abu Hashim, from Abu Majliz as his own statement.
They both agreed and included the hadith of Thawri and Hushaym, from Abu Hashim, from Abu Majliz, from Qays bin Abbad, from Abu Dharr, that he used to swear an oath that "These two groups are opponents who disputed" [Hajj 22:19] was revealed concerning the six men who fought in single combat on the day of Badr. They also included, from the hadith of Taymi, from Abu Majliz, from Qays bin Abbad, from Ali, who said, "I am the first to kneel for the dispute." Qays said, "And it was about this that 'These two groups are opponents who disputed' was revealed," and he did not carry the narration beyond Qays. Then Bukhari said, "Uthman reported from Jareer, from Mansur, from Abu Hashim, from someone other than his own account, so the hadith became confused."
Hafiz said in the introduction to Fath al-Bari, page 372 (Tabarani in al-Saghir), I say, there is no inconsistency in it. Rather, in Mansur's narration, Mansur left it disconnected, but Tabarani connected it (1) through Ibn Humayd (2), if Ibn Humayd preserved it accurately, and Thawri and Hushaym also connected it.
