Abu Hurairah reported,

He traced it back to the Prophet ﷺ, who said, "When Allah decrees a matter in the heaven, the angels beat their wings in submission to His word, a sound like a chain dragged across smooth rock." Ali said that others pronounced it safwan. "That sound passes through them, and when 'terror is lifted from their hearts, they say, "What did your Lord say?" They say' [Saba 34:23], to the one who asked, 'The truth, and He is the Most High, the Most Great' [Saba 34:23]. Then those who steal a hearing catch it, and those who steal a hearing are positioned like this, one above another."Sufyan illustrated this with his hand, spreading the fingers of his right hand and holding them upright, one above the other."Sometimes the shooting star strikes the listener before he can pass what he heard down to his companion, and it burns him. Sometimes it does not reach him until he has passed it on to the one next to him, the one below him, and so on until they deliver it to the earth." Sometimes Sufyan said, "until it reaches the earth." "Then it is cast onto the mouth of the sorcerer, and he tells a hundred lies along with it, yet he is believed. People say, 'Did he not tell us that on such and such a day such and such would happen? And we found it to be true,' all because of that one word overheard from the heaven."Ali bin Abdullah reported to us, Sufyan reported to us, Amr reported to us, from Ikrima, from Abu Hurairah, "When Allah decrees a matter," and he added, "and the soothsayer."Ali bin Abdullah also reported to us, Sufyan reported to us and said that Amr said, "I heard Ikrima say, Abu Hurairah reported to us, saying, 'When Allah decrees a matter,'" and he said, "onto the mouth of the sorcerer."I asked Sufyan, "Did you yourself hear Amr say that he heard Ikrima say that he heard Abu Hurairah?"He replied, "Yes."I said to Sufyan, "Someone narrated from you, from Amr, from Ikrima, from Abu Hurairah, attributing it to the Prophet, that he recited it as furigha."Sufyan said, "That is how Amr recited it, but I do not know whether he heard it that way or not." Sufyan added, "And that is our recitation."
