I heard Kaab bin Malik say, regarding the time he stayed behind from Tabuk, "By Allah, no favor has Allah bestowed upon me after guiding me greater than my telling the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the truth, so that I did not lie to him and thus perish as those perished who lied, when the revelation came down, "They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them" [Tawbah 9:95], down to His words, "the rebellious people" [Tawbah 9:96]."

سمعت كعب بن مالك حين تخلف عن تبوك والله ما أنعم الله علي من نعمة بعد إذ هداني أعظم من صدقي رسول الله ﷺ أن لا أكون كذبته فأهلك كما هلك الذين كذبوا حين أنزل الوحي {سيحلفون بالله لكم إذا انقلبتم إليهم} إلى قوله {الفاسقين}
