Saeed bin Jubayr reported,

I asked Ibn Abbas Surah Anfal. He said, "It was revealed concerning Badr.""Shawkah" means the sharp edge. "In succession" [Anfal 8:9] means troop after troop. From this comes "radifani" and "ardafani," meaning he came after me. "Taste" [Anfal 8:50] means undergo it and experience it, and this is not tasting with the mouth. "Then He piles it up" [Anfal 8:37] means He gathers it together. "Sharrid" means scatter. "But if they incline" [Anfal 8:61] means they seek peace, and "silm," "salm," and "salam" are all one and the same. "Yuthkhin" means to overpower.Mujahid said that "whistling" [Anfal 8:35] means putting their fingers into their mouths, and "clapping" means whistling. "That they might detain you" [Anfal 8:30] means that they might hold you captive.

عن سعيد بن جبير قال

قلت لابن عباس رضي الله عنهما سورة الأنفال قال نزلت في بدر الشوكة الحد {مردفين} فوجا بعد فوج ردفني وأردفني جاء بعدي {ذوقوا} باشروا وجربوا وليس هذا من ذوق الفم {فيركمه} يجمعه شرد فرق {وإن جنحوا} طلبوا السلم والسلم والسلام واحد {يثخن} يغلب وقال مجاهد {مكاء} إدخال أصابعهم في أفواههم {وتصدية} الصفير {ليثبتوك} ليحبسوك
