Muhammad bin Abdul-Rahman reported,

A military expedition was levied upon the people of Madinah, and I had my name entered in it. Then I met Ikrima, the freed slave of Ibn Abbas, and told him about it, and he forbade me from doing so in the strongest terms. Then he said, "Ibn Abbas told me that there were people among the Muslims who used to be with the idolaters, swelling the ranks of the idolaters in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. An arrow would come, shot at them, and strike one of them and kill him, or he would be struck down and killed. So Allah revealed, 'Indeed, those whom the angels take while they are wronging themselves' [Nisa 4:97]."Layth narrated it from Abu Aswad.
