The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "If the wealth of Bahrain comes, I will give you this much, and this much, and this much," indicating three handfuls. But the wealth of Bahrain did not arrive before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away.When it reached Abu Bakr, he ordered a caller to announce, "Whoever had a debt or a promise from the Prophet ﷺ, let him come to me."Jabir said, "So I went to Abu Bakr and informed him that the Prophet ﷺ had said, 'If the wealth of Bahrain comes, I will give you this much, and this much, and this much,' three times." So Abu Bakr gave it to me.Jabir said, "Later I met Abu Bakr and asked him, but he did not give me anything. Then I came to him again, and he did not give me. Then I came a third time, and he still did not give me."So I said to him, "I came to you and you did not give me, then I came again and you did not give me, then I came again and you did not give me. Either give me, or be miserly toward me."He said, "Did you say, 'be miserly toward me'? What disease is worse than miserliness?" He said it three times. "I have not refused you a single time except that I intended to give you."From Amr, from Muhammad bin Ali, who said, "I heard Jabir bin Abdullah say, 'I came to him, and Abu Bakr said to me, "Count them." So I counted them and found they were five hundred. He said, "Take the same amount twice more."'"
حدثنا قتيبة بن سعيد حدثنا سفيان سمع ابن المنكدر
قال لي رسول الله ﷺ لو قد جاء مال البحرين لقد أعطيتك هكذا وهكذا ثلاثا فلم يقدم مال البحرين حتى قبض رسول الله ﷺ فلما قدم على أبي بكر أمر مناديا فنادى من كان له عند النبي ﷺ دين أو عدة فليأتني قال جابر فجئت أبا بكر فأخبرته أن النبي ﷺ قال لو جاء مال البحرين أعطيتك هكذا وهكذا ثلاثا قال فأعطاني قال جابر فلقيت أبا بكر بعد ذلك فسألته فلم يعطني ثم أتيته فلم يعطني ثم أتيته الثالثة فلم يعطني فقلت له قد أتيتك فلم تعطني ثم أتيتك فلم تعطني ثم أتيتك فلم تعطني فإما أن تعطيني وإما أن تبخل عني فقال أقلت تبخل عني وأي داء أدوأ من البخل قالها ثلاثا ما منعتك من مرة إلا وأنا أريد أن أعطيك وعن عمرو عن محمد بن علي سمعت جابر بن عبد الله يقول جئته فقال لي أبو بكر عدها فعددتها فوجدتها خمس مائة فقال خذ مثلها مرتين
