On the day of Hunayn, I saw a man from the Muslims fighting one of the polytheists, while another polytheist was sneaking up behind him to kill him. I rushed toward the one trying to ambush him. He raised his hand to strike me, but I struck his hand and cut it off. Then he seized me and squeezed me so tightly that I feared for my life, until finally his grip loosened. I pushed him away and killed him.The Muslims were then routed, and I retreated along with them. There I found Umar bin Khattab among the people.I asked him, "What has happened to the people?"He replied, "It is the decree of Allah."Then the people regrouped around the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced, "Whoever produces evidence that he killed a slain enemy may have his spoils."So I stood up to look for someone to testify on behalf of my slain foe, but I found no one to bear witness for me. I sat down, then decided to mention the matter to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.A man sitting with him said, "The weapons of the slain man he is speaking of are with me. Satisfy him in their stead."Abu Bakr said, "No indeed. He shall not give them to some little nobody from Quraysh and pass over a lion among the lions of Allah who fights on behalf of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then stood up and handed them over to me. I sold them and bought a small palm grove with the proceeds. That was the first property I ever acquired in Islam.
وقال الليث حدثني يحيى بن سعيد عن عمر بن كثير بن أفلح عن أبي محمد مولى أبي قتادة أن
لما كان يوم حنين نظرت إلى رجل من المسلمين يقاتل رجلا من المشركين وآخر من المشركين يختله من ورائه ليقتله فأسرعت إلى الذي يختله فرفع يده ليضربني وأضرب يده فقطعتها ثم أخذني فضمني ضما شديدا حتى تخوفت ثم ترك فتحلل ودفعته ثم قتلته وانهزم المسلمون وانهزمت معهم فإذا بعمر بن الخطاب في الناس فقلت له ما شأن الناس قال أمر الله ثم تراجع الناس إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقال رسول الله ﷺ من أقام بينة على قتيل قتله فله سلبه فقمت لألتمس بينة على قتيلي فلم أر أحدا يشهد لي فجلست ثم بدا لي فذكرت أمره لرسول الله ﷺ فقال رجل من جلسائه سلاح هذا القتيل الذي يذكر عندي فأرضه منه فقال أبو بكر كلا لا يعطه أصيبغ من قريش ويدع أسدا من أسد الله يقاتل عن الله ورسوله ﷺ قال فقام رسول الله ﷺ فأداه إلي فاشتريت منه خرافا فكان أول مال تأثلته في الإسلام
