We were struck by famine on the day of Khaybar, and the cooking pots were boiling. Some of them had already finished cooking when the Prophet's ﷺ announcer came and called out, "Do not eat anything from the flesh of donkeys, and pour them out."Ibn Abu Awfa said, "We discussed among ourselves that he prohibited it only because the fifth share had not been set aside from it." Others said that he prohibited it altogether because the donkeys used to eat filth.
حدثنا سعيد بن سليمان حدثنا عباد عن الشيباني قال سمعت
أصابتنا مجاعة يوم خيبر فإن القدور لتغلي قال وبعضها نضجت فجاء منادي النبي ﷺ لا تأكلوا من لحوم الحمر شيئا وأهرقوها قال ابن أبي أوفى فتحدثنا أنه إنما نهى عنها لأنها لم تخمس وقال بعضهم نهى عنها البتة لأنها كانت تأكل العذرة
