When Sahl bin Hunayf returned from Siffin, we came to him seeking news. He said, "Be suspicious of your own opinions. I saw myself on the day of Abu Jandal, and had I been able to reject the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would have rejected it. Allah and His Messenger know best. We have never placed our swords on our shoulders for any frightening matter except that they led us to an outcome we could recognize, until this present affair. We do not close one breach but another bursts open upon us, and we do not know how to deal with it."
حدثنا الحسن بن إسحاق حدثنا محمد بن سابق حدثنا مالك بن مغول قال سمعت أبا حصين قال قال
لما قدم سهل بن حنيف من صفين أتيناه نستخبره فقال اتهموا الرأي فلقد رأيتني يوم أبي جندل ولو أستطيع أن أرد على رسول الله ﷺ أمره لرددت والله ورسوله أعلم وما وضعنا أسيافنا على عواتقنا لأمر يفظعنا إلا أسهلن بنا إلى أمر نعرفه قبل هذا الأمر ما نسد منها خصما إلا انفجر علينا خصم ما ندري كيف نأتي له
