Zuhri reported,

Walid bin Abdul-Malik said to me, "Has it reached you that Ali was among those who slandered Ayesha?"I replied, "No, but two men from your people, Abu Salama bin Abdul-Rahman and Abu Bakr bin Abdul-Rahman bin Harith, informed me that Ayesha told them that Ali had remained silent regarding her affair."They went back to him about it, but he did not retract, and he insisted, "Silent, without any doubt about it." And this is how it was in the original old manuscript.

حدثني عبد الله بن محمد قال أملى علي هشام بن يوسف من حفظه أخبرنا معمر

عن الزهري قال

قال لي الوليد بن عبد الملك أبلغك أن عليا كان فيمن قذف عائشة قلت لا ولكن قد أخبرني رجلان من قومك أبو سلمة بن عبد الرحمن وأبو بكر بن عبد الرحمن بن الحارث أن عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت لهما كان علي مسلما في شأنها فراجعوه فلم يرجع وقال مسلما بلا شك فيه وعليه كان في أصل العتيق كذلك
