It is reported from someone who was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Dhat al-Riqa that he performed the prayer of fear. One group lined up behind him while another faced the enemy. He prayed one rakah with the group that was with him, then remained standing while they completed the prayer on their own. They then withdrew and took up position facing the enemy. The other group came forward, and he prayed with them the rakah that remained of his prayer, then remained seated while they completed the prayer on their own. He then concluded the prayer with them by giving the salam.
Both of them (Bukhari and Muslim) narrated the hadith of Malik, from Yazid bin Ruman, from Salih bin Khawwat, from one who prayed with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. They also both narrated it through Shubah, from Abdul-Rahman bin Qasim, from his father, from Salih, from Sahl bin Abu Hathma, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family.Bukhari alone narrated it through Yahya bin Saeed, from Qasim, from Salih, from Sahl, as a stopped report (mawquf).
Hafiz, may Allah have mercy on him, said in the introduction to Fath al-Bari, p. 369, after mentioning Daraqutni's statement,I say, there is another disagreement regarding Salih, for it was said, on his authority, from his father. This is the narration of Abu Uways from Yazid bin Ruman, which Ibn Manda recorded in Marifah. It is therefore possible that this explains the unnamed person in Malik's narration. As for the conflict between the raised and stopped versions in the hadith of Sahl, the raised version is well known from him. And Allah knows best.
