I came to Sham, prayed two units of prayer, and said, "Allah, provide me with a good companion to sit with." Then I saw an elderly man approaching, and when he drew near I thought to myself, "I hope my prayer has been answered."He asked, "Where are you from?"I replied, "From the people of Kufa."He said, "Was there not among you the keeper of the sandals, the cushion, and the water vessel? Was there not among you the one who was granted protection from Satan? Was there not among you the keeper of the secret that no one else knew? How did Ibn Umm Abd recite 'By the night'?"So I recited, "By the night when it covers, and by the day when it shines forth" [Layl 92:1–2], and "the male and the female."He said, "The Prophet ﷺ taught me that recitation mouth to mouth, yet these people kept at me until they nearly made me abandon it."
حدثنا موسى عن أبي عوانة عن مغيرة عن إبراهيم
دخلت الشأم فصليت ركعتين فقلت اللهم يسر لي جليسا فرأيت شيخا مقبلا فلما دنا قلت أرجو أن يكون استجاب قال من أين أنت قلت من أهل الكوفة قال أفلم يكن فيكم صاحب النعلين والوساد والمطهرة أولم يكن فيكم الذي أجير من الشيطان أولم يكن فيكم صاحب السر الذي لا يعلمه غيره كيف قرأ ابن أم عبد {والليل} فقرأت {والليل إذا يغشى والنهار إذا تجلى} والذكر والأنثى قال أقرأنيها النبي ﷺ فاه إلى في فما زال هؤلاء حتى كادوا يردوني
