People used to say that Abu Hurairah narrates too many hadith. I used to stay close to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ just to fill my belly, eating no leavened bread and wearing no fine clothing, with no man or woman to serve me. I would press my stomach against the pebbles from hunger, and I would ask a man to recite a verse to me that I already knew, hoping he would take me home with him and feed me.The most generous person to the poor was Jafar bin Abu Talib. He would take us home with him and feed us whatever was in his house, to the point that he would bring out to us an empty butter skin which we would split open and lick whatever was inside.

أن الناس كانوا يقولون أكثر أبو هريرة وإني كنت ألزم رسول الله ﷺ بشبع بطني حتى لا آكل الخمير ولا ألبس الحبير ولا يخدمني فلان ولا فلانة وكنت ألصق بطني بالحصباء من الجوع وإن كنت لأستقرئ الرجل الآية هي معي كي ينقلب بي فيطعمني وكان أخير الناس للمسكين جعفر بن أبي طالب كان ينقلب بنا فيطعمنا ما كان في بيته حتى إن كان ليخرج إلينا العكة التي ليس فيها شيء فنشقها فنلعق ما فيها
