I saw Umar bin Khattab in Medina a few days before he was struck down. He stopped before Huzaifa bin Yaman and Uthman bin Hunayf and said, "How have you handled matters? Are you afraid that you may have burdened the land with more than it can bear?"They replied, "We have imposed on it only what it can bear. There is no great surplus in it."Umar said, "Look carefully, lest you have burdened the land with more than it can bear."They said, "No, we have not."Umar then said, "If Allah keeps me safe, I shall leave the widows of Iraq never needing any man after me, ever."Only four days passed after this before he was struck down. The narrator said, I was standing right there, with no one between me and him except Abdullah bin Abbas, on the morning he was struck. Whenever Umar passed between the rows, he would say, "Straighten your lines." When he saw no gap in them, he would step forward and say the takbir. He would often recite Surah Yusuf, or an-Nahl, or something of that length in the first rakah, so that the people could gather. He had only just said the takbir when I heard him say, "The dog has killed me," or "has bitten me," at the moment he was stabbed. The non-Arab attacker flew about with a two-edged dagger, stabbing everyone he passed on his right or left, until he had stabbed thirteen men, seven of whom died. When one of the Muslims saw this, he threw a hooded cloak over him. When the attacker realized he was caught, he killed himself.Umar took the hand of Abdul-Rahman bin Awf and pushed him forward to lead the prayer. Those who stood near Umar saw what I saw. As for those at the sides of the mosque, they did not know what had happened, only that they had lost the sound of Umar's voice, and they kept saying, "Glory be to Allah, glory be to Allah." Abdul-Rahman led them in a brief prayer. When they finished, Umar said, "Ibn Abbas, find out who killed me."Ibn Abbas went around for a while, then came back and said, "The slave of Mughira."Umar asked, "The craftsman?"He replied, "Yes."Umar said, "May Allah fight him. I had given orders concerning him for good treatment. Praise be to Allah who did not let my death come at the hand of a man who claims Islam. You and your father used to love that the non-Arabs become numerous in Medina." Abbas had the most slaves among them.Ibn Abbas said, "If you wish, I will do it," meaning, "If you wish, we will kill them."Umar said, "You are wrong, after they have spoken your language, prayed toward your qibla, and performed your hajj."He was carried to his house, and we went with him. It was as though the people had never been struck by any calamity before that day. Some said, "He will be fine," and others said, "I fear for him." Some date-wine was brought to him and he drank it, but it came out from his belly. Then milk was brought and he drank it, but it came out from his wound. They knew then that he was dying. We entered upon him, and people came and began to praise him. A young man came and said, "Rejoice, Commander of the Faithful, at glad tidings from Allah. You had the companionship of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and were among the early Muslims, as you know. Then you became ruler and ruled with justice, and now martyrdom."Umar said, "I would wish that this might be enough that nothing be against me and nothing for me."When the young man turned to leave, his lower garment was touching the ground. Umar said, "Bring the young man back to me." Then he said, "Nephew, lift your garment, for it is more lasting for your garment and more dutiful toward your Lord. Abdullah bin Umar, see what debts I owe."They calculated and found it to be about eighty-six thousand or thereabouts. He said, "If the wealth of Umar's family is enough, then pay it from their wealth. If not, ask among Banu Adi bin Kaab. If their wealth is not enough, ask among Quraysh and do not go beyond them to others. Pay this debt on my behalf.Go to Ayesha, Umm Muiminin, and say, 'Umar sends you greetings of peace.' Do not say 'Commander of the Faithful,' for I am not today commander of the believers. Say, 'Umar bin Khattab seeks permission to be buried with his two companions.'"Abdullah greeted her, sought permission, then entered upon her and found her sitting and weeping. He said, "Umar bin Khattab sends you greetings of peace and asks permission to be buried with his two companions."She said, "I had wanted that place for myself, but today I shall prefer him over myself."When Abdullah came back, it was said, "Here comes Abdullah bin Umar."Umar said, "Lift me up." A man propped him against himself. Umar asked, "What news do you bring?"He said, "What you love, Commander of the Faithful. She has given permission."Umar said, "Praise be to Allah. Nothing was more important to me than that. When I am dead, carry me, then give the greeting of peace and say, 'Umar bin Khattab seeks permission.' If she gives me permission, take me in. If she turns me back, return me to the cemetery of the Muslims."Umm Muiminin Hafsa came, with the women walking with her. When we saw her, we got up. She entered upon him and wept by him for a while. Then the men sought permission, and she withdrew inside for them, and we heard her weeping from inside. They said, "Make your final instructions, Commander of the Faithful. Appoint a successor."He said, "I find no one more deserving of this matter than these few men with whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was pleased when he died." He named Ali, Uthman, Zubayr, Talha, Saad, and Abdul-Rahman, and said, "Abdullah bin Umar shall be a witness over you, but he shall have no part in the matter," as a kind of consolation to him. "If the leadership falls to Saad, so be it. Otherwise, whichever of you is appointed should seek his help, for I did not remove him from his post out of incompetence or treachery."He said, "I instruct the caliph who comes after me concerning the early Muhajirun, that he should recognize their rights and preserve their honor. I instruct him to treat the Ansar well, those who had settled in the home and adopted the faith before them [Hashr 59:9], that he should accept from those of them who do good and pardon those who err. I instruct him to treat the people of the garrison towns well, for they are the shield of Islam, the collectors of revenue, and a source of rage to the enemy, and that nothing be taken from them except their surplus, and with their consent. I instruct him to treat the Bedouin Arabs well, for they are the root of the Arabs and the substance of Islam, that what is taken from them be from the margins of their wealth and returned to their poor. I instruct him concerning the covenant of Allah and the covenant of His Messenger ﷺ, that their treaty obligations be fulfilled, that they be defended in battle, and that they not be burdened beyond their capacity."When he died, we carried him out and walked along. Abdullah bin Umar gave the greeting and said, "Umar bin Khattab seeks permission."She said, "Bring him in." He was brought in and placed there with his two companions. When the burial was complete, this group gathered together. Abdul-Rahman said, "Entrust your matter to three among you."Zubayr said, "I have entrusted my matter to Ali."Talha said, "I have entrusted my matter to Uthman."Saad said, "I have entrusted my matter to Abdul-Rahman bin Awf."Abdul-Rahman said, "Which of the two of you will withdraw from this matter so that we may give it to the other? With Allah and Islam as his witness, he must consider who is the most virtuous among them."The two elders fell silent. Abdul-Rahman said, "Will you entrust it to me? With Allah as my witness, I shall not fall short in choosing the best of you."They said, "Yes."He took the hand of one of them and said, "You have kinship with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the precedence in Islam that you know. By Allah, if I appoint you, you must rule justly, and if I appoint Uthman, you must listen and obey." Then he went aside privately with the other and said the same to him. When he had taken the pledge, he said, "Raise your hand, Uthman," and pledged allegiance to him. Ali pledged allegiance to him, and the people of the household came in and pledged allegiance to him.
