Miswar bin Makhrama reported,

When Umar was stabbed, he was in great pain. Ibn Abbas said to him, as if to console him, "Commander of the Believers, even if that has happened, you accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and kept his company well, then parted from him while he was pleased with you. Then you accompanied Abu Bakr and kept his company well, then parted from him while he was pleased with you. Then you kept the company of his companions and kept it well, and if you part from them, you will part from them while they are pleased with you."Umar replied, "As for what you mentioned of accompanying the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his being pleased with me, that is only a favor from Allah Almighty that He bestowed upon me. As for what you mentioned of accompanying Abu Bakr and his being pleased with me, that too is only a favor from Allah, glorified be His mention, that He bestowed upon me. As for the distress you see in me, it is on account of you and your companions. By Allah, if I had the earth filled with gold, I would ransom myself with it from the punishment of Allah عز وجل before I face it."Hammad bin Zayd said, Ayub narrated to us from Ibn Abu Mulayka from Ibn Abbas, "I entered upon Umar," and he related this account.
