I said to Ibn Abbas, "Nawf Bikali claims that the Musa who was Khidr's companion was not the Musa of the Children of Israil, but some other Musa."Ibn Abbas replied, "The enemy of Allah has lied. Ubayy bin Kaab told us that the Prophet ﷺ said that Musa once stood to address the Children of Israil and was asked, 'Who is the most knowledgeable of people?'"He answered, 'I am.'"So Allah reproached him, because he had not referred the matter of knowledge back to Him, and He said to him, 'Not so. I have a servant at the junction of the two seas who is more knowledgeable than you.'"Musa said, 'My Lord, how can I reach him?'"Sufyan sometimes said that he asked, "My Lord, and how am I to find him?"Allah said, "Take a fish and put it in a basket. Wherever you lose the fish, he is there." Sometimes the narrator said, "he is right there."So Musa took a fish and put it in a basket, then set out with his young companion Yusha bin Nun. When the two reached the rock, they laid down their heads and Musa slept. The fish stirred, slipped out, and fell into the sea, "and it took its way into the sea, slipping away" [Kahf 18:61]. Allah held back the flow of the water from the fish so that it became like an arch. The narrator said, "Like this, like an arch."The two went on walking for the rest of that night and the next day. When the following morning came, "he said to his companion, 'Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered fatigue on this journey of ours'" [Kahf 18:62]. Musa had felt no fatigue until he passed the place Allah had appointed for him. His companion said to him, "Did you see, when we took shelter at the rock? I forgot the fish, and none made me forget to mention it but Satan. And it took its way into the sea, marvelously" [Kahf 18:63]. For the fish it was a passage, and for the two of them a marvel.Musa said to him, "That is what we were seeking. So they went back, retracing their steps" [Kahf 18:64]. They returned, following their own tracks, until they came back to the rock, and there was a man wrapped in a garment.Musa greeted him with peace, and the man returned the greeting and said, "How is there peace in your land?"Musa said, "I am Musa."The man asked, "The Musa of the Children of Israil?"Musa said, "Yes. I have come to you so that you may teach me "some of the right guidance you have been taught" [Kahf 18:66]."Khidr said, "Musa, I have a knowledge from the knowledge of Allah which Allah taught me and which you do not know, and you have a knowledge from the knowledge of Allah which Allah taught you and which I do not know."Musa asked, "May I follow you?"He replied, "Indeed, you will not be able to have patience with me. And how can you be patient about something of which you have no knowledge?" [Kahf 18:67–68], up to His words, "a dreadful thing" [Kahf 18:71].So the two set off, walking along the shore of the sea, when a ship passed by them. They spoke to the crew, asking to be carried aboard. The crew recognized Khidr and carried them without fare. When the two had boarded the ship, a sparrow came and settled on the edge of the vessel and dipped its beak once or twice into the sea.Khidr said to him, "Musa, my knowledge and yours have diminished nothing of the knowledge of Allah except as much as this sparrow has diminished the sea with its beak."Then Khidr took the axe and pulled out a plank. Musa was startled to find that he had pried loose a plank with an adze.Musa said to him, "What have you done? These are people who carried us without fare, and you have gone to their ship and made a hole in it "so as to drown its people? You have certainly done a dreadful thing." He said, "Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?" He said, "Do not blame me for what I forgot, and do not be hard on me in my affair" [Kahf 18:71–73]. So the first instance on Musa's part was forgetfulness. When they left the sea, they passed a boy playing with other children. Khidr took hold of his head and tore it off with his hand, like this. Sufyan gestured with his fingertips as though plucking something.Musa said to him, "Have you killed a pure soul, for no soul slain? You have certainly done a monstrous thing." He said, "Did I not tell you that you would not be able to have patience with me?" He said, "If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me in your company. You have received from me my excuse." So they went on until, when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to show them any hospitality. There they found a wall on the point of collapsing" [Kahf 18:74–77], leaning over.He gestured with his hand like this, and Sufyan motioned as though smoothing something upward. I did not hear Sufyan mention the word "leaning" except once.Musa said, "These are people we came to, and they neither fed us nor showed us hospitality, yet you have gone to their wall. "Had you wished, you could have taken a wage for it." He said, "This is the parting between me and you. I will inform you of the meaning of that over which you could not be patient" [Kahf 18:77–78]."The Prophet ﷺ said, "We would have wished that Musa had been patient, so that Allah would have related more of their story to us."Sufyan reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Musa. Had he been patient, more of their affair would have been related to us."Ibn Abbas recited, "Before them was a king who seized every sound ship by force," and, "As for the boy, he was a disbeliever, and his parents were believers."Then Sufyan said to me, "I heard it from him twice and memorized it from him."Someone asked Sufyan, "Did you memorize it before you heard it from Amr, or did you memorize it from someone else?"He said, "From whom would I have memorized it? Has anyone other than me narrated it from Amr? I heard it from him twice or three times and memorized it from him."
