I asked Umm Ruman, the mother of Ayesha, about what had been said concerning Ayesha. She replied:While I was sitting with Ayesha, a woman from the Ansar came in upon us, saying, "May Allah do such-and-such to so-and-so, and may He do such-and-such!"I asked, "Why?"She said, "He spread the rumor."Ayesha asked, "What rumor?"So the woman informed her of it. Ayesha asked, "Did Abu Bakr and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hear of it?"She said, "Yes."At this Ayesha collapsed unconscious, and when she came to, she was shivering with fever. The Prophet ﷺ came in and asked, "What is wrong with her?"I said, "A fever has seized her on account of a rumor that has been spread."Ayesha sat up and said, "By Allah, if I swear an oath, you will not believe me, and if I offer an excuse, you will not accept it. My situation and yours is like that of Yaqub and his sons. So Allah's help is sought against what you describe."The Prophet ﷺ left, and Allah revealed what He revealed. The Prophet ﷺ then informed her of it, and she said, "Praise be to Allah alone, not to anyone else."
حدثنا محمد بن سلام أخبرنا ابن فضيل حدثنا حصين عن شقيق
سألت أم رومان وهي أم عائشة عما قيل فيها ما قيل قالت بينما أنا مع عائشة جالستان إذ ولجت علينا امرأة من الأنصار وهي تقول فعل الله بفلان وفعل قالت فقلت لم قالت إنه نمى ذكر الحديث فقالت عائشة أي حديث فأخبرتها قالت فسمعه أبو بكر ورسول الله ﷺ قالت نعم فخرت مغشيا عليها فما أفاقت إلا وعليها حمى بنافض فجاء النبي ﷺ فقال ما لهذه قلت حمى أخذتها من أجل حديث تحدث به فقعدت فقالت والله لئن حلفت لا تصدقوني ولئن اعتذرت لا تعذروني فمثلي ومثلكم كمثل يعقوب وبنيه فالله المستعان على ما تصفون فانصرف النبي ﷺ فأنزل الله ما أنزل فأخبرها فقالت بحمد الله لا بحمد أحد
