Bara bin Azib reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent a group of the Ansar to Abu Rafi to kill him. One of the men set out and entered their fortress. He said, "I hid in a stable where they kept their animals."They closed the gate of the fortress, but then they discovered that one of their donkeys was missing, so they went out searching for it. I went out among those who went out, pretending to be searching for it with them. They found the donkey, went back in, and I went in with them, and they shut the gate of the fortress for the night. They placed the keys in a small window where I could see them.Once they were asleep, I took the keys, opened the gate of the fortress, and then went in to him. I called out, "Abu Rafi!" He answered, and I aimed for the sound of his voice and struck him. He cried out, so I went out, then came back and returned as if coming to his aid. I called, "Abu Rafi!" disguising my voice.He said, "What is wrong with you? May your mother be bereaved!"I asked, "What has happened to you?"He replied, "I do not know. Someone came in and struck me."So I drove my sword into his belly and pressed down on it until it struck bone. Then I went out, dazed, and came to a ladder of theirs to climb down. I fell and sprained my foot. I went out to my companions and said, "I will not leave until I hear the death announcement."I did not move until I heard the death of Abu Rafi, the merchant of the people of Hijaz, being announced. I got up, and there was nothing wrong with me, until we came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him.

حدثنا علي بن مسلم حدثنا يحيى بن زكرياء بن أبي زائدة قال حدثني أبي عن أبي إسحاق

عن البراء بن عازب رضي الله عنهما قال

بعث رسول الله ﷺ رهطا من الأنصار إلى أبي رافع ليقتلوه فانطلق رجل منهم فدخل حصنهم قال فدخلت في مربط دواب لهم قال وأغلقوا باب الحصن ثم إنهم فقدوا حمارا لهم فخرجوا يطلبونه فخرجت فيمن خرج أريهم أنني أطلبه معهم فوجدوا الحمار فدخلوا ودخلت وأغلقوا باب الحصن ليلا فوضعوا المفاتيح في كوة حيث أراها فلما ناموا أخذت المفاتيح ففتحت باب الحصن ثم دخلت عليه فقلت يا أبا رافع فأجابني فتعمدت الصوت فضربته فصاح فخرجت ثم جئت ثم رجعت كأني مغيث فقلت يا أبا رافع وغيرت صوتي فقال ما لك لأمك الويل قلت ما شأنك قال لا أدري من دخل علي فضربني قال فوضعت سيفي في بطنه ثم تحاملت عليه حتى قرع العظم ثم خرجت وأنا دهش فأتيت سلما لهم لأنزل منه فوقعت فوثئت رجلي فخرجت إلى أصحابي فقلت ما أنا ببارح حتى أسمع الناعية فما برحت حتى سمعت نعايا أبي رافع تاجر أهل الحجاز قال فقمت وما بي قلبة حتى أتينا النبي ﷺ فأخبرناه
