Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

A man from the tribe of Banu Sahm set out on a journey with Tamim Dari and Adi bin Bada. The man from Banu Sahm died in a land where no Muslim was present. When the two returned with his estate, the family found that a silver cup plated with gold was missing. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made them swear an oath. Later, the cup was discovered in Makkah, and the people who had it said, "We bought it from Tamim and Adi."Then two men from among the deceased's relatives stood up and swore, "Our testimony is more deserving of acceptance than their testimony" [Maidah 5:107], and that the cup belonged to their kinsman.The narrator said, "It was concerning them that this verse was revealed, 'You who believe, when death approaches one of you, let there be testimony among you'" [Maidah 5:106].

و قال لي علي بن عبد الله حدثنا يحيى بن آدم حدثنا ابن أبي زائدة عن محمد بن أبي القاسم عن عبد الملك بن سعيد بن جبير عن أبيه

عن ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما قال

خرج رجل من بني سهم مع تميم الداري وعدي بن بداء فمات السهمي بأرض ليس بها مسلم فلما قدما بتركته فقدوا جاما من فضة مخوصا من ذهب فأحلفهما رسول الله ﷺ ثم وجد الجام بمكة فقالوا ابتعناه من تميم وعدي فقام رجلان من أوليائه فحلفا {لشهادتنا أحق من شهادتهما} وإن الجام لصاحبهم قال وفيهم نزلت هذه الآية {يا أيها الذين آمنوا شهادة بينكم إذا حضر أحدكم الموت}

Allah's saying, "O you who believe, testimony between you when death approaches one of you at the time of making a bequest is that of two just men from among you, or two others from outside if you are traveling through the land and the calamity of death befalls you. Detain them after the prayer, and let them both swear by Allah if you doubt, 'We will not exchange it for a price even if he were a near relative, and we will not conceal the testimony of Allah, for then we would be among the sinners.' But if it is found that those two were guilty of sin, then two others shall take their place from among those who have a claim against them, the two nearest in kin, and they shall swear by Allah, 'Our testimony is truer than their testimony, and we have not transgressed, for then we would be among the wrongdoers.' That is more likely that they will give testimony according to its true nature, or else they would fear that oaths will be taken after their oaths. And fear Allah and listen, and Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people." Awlayan, the singular of which is awla, meaning more entitled, and from it is awla bihi. Uthira means it was disclosed, and atharrana means we disclosed
