Umar gave away some property of his as charity during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The property was called Thamgh and consisted of date palms.Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, I have acquired some property that is precious to me, and I wish to give it as charity."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Give the property itself as charity, on the condition that it is not to be sold, gifted, or inherited, but its produce may be spent."So Umar gave it as charity, and that charity of his went toward the cause of Allah, the freeing of slaves, the poor, guests, travelers, and close relatives. There is no blame on whoever administers it if he eats from it in a reasonable manner or feeds a friend, so long as he does not accumulate wealth from it.
حدثنا هارون بن الأشعث حدثنا أبو سعيد مولى بني هاشم حدثنا صخر بن جويرية عن نافع
أن عمر تصدق بمال له على عهد رسول الله ﷺ وكان يقال له ثمغ وكان نخلا فقال عمر يا رسول الله إني استفدت مالا وهو عندي نفيس فأردت أن أتصدق به فقال النبي ﷺ تصدق بأصله لا يباع ولا يوهب ولا يورث ولكن ينفق ثمره فتصدق به عمر فصدقته تلك في سبيل الله وفي الرقاب والمساكين والضيف وابن السبيل ولذي القربى ولا جناح على من وليه أن يأكل منه بالمعروف أو يوكل صديقه غير متمول به
