Miswar bin Makhrama and Marwan reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out at the time of Hudaybiya, and when they had covered part of the way the Prophet ﷺ said, "Khalid bin Walid is at Ghamim with a squadron of Quraysh cavalry as a scouting party, so take the road to the right." By Allah, Khalid was not even aware of them until he suddenly saw the dust of the army, and then he raced off to warn Quraysh. The Prophet ﷺ rode on, and when he reached the mountain pass by which one descends toward them, his mount knelt down beneath him. The people cried, "Hal! Hal!" but she refused to budge. They said, "Qaswa has become stubborn. Qaswa has become stubborn."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Qaswa has not become stubborn. That is not her nature. Rather, the One who held back the elephant is holding her back."Then he said, "By the One in whose hand my soul rests, they will not ask me for any terms in which they honor the sanctities of Allah without my granting it to them." Then he urged the camel on and she sprang up.He turned away from them and camped at the far end of Hudaybiya beside a shallow waterhole with very little water, which the people drew out a handful at a time. They did not leave it long before they had drained it dry, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was told of their thirst. He drew an arrow from his quiver and ordered them to place it in the hole, and by Allah, the water kept welling up for them until they had all drunk their fill and turned away satisfied. While they were in this state, Budayl bin Warqa Khuzai came with a group of his people from Khuza. They were the trusted confidants of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ among the people of Tihama.Budayl said, "I have just left Kaab bin Luayy and Amir bin Luayy camped at the abundant springs of Hudaybiya. With them are milk camels and their young, and they mean to fight you and bar you from the House."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "We have not come to fight anyone. We have come only to perform the pilgrimage. War has worn Quraysh down and damaged them. If they wish, I will grant them a truce for a period, and they must leave me free to deal with the other people. If I then prevail, and they wish to enter into what the rest of the people have entered into, they may do so. Otherwise they will at least have had their rest. But if they refuse, then by the One in whose hand my soul rests, I will fight them for this cause of mine until my neck is severed, and Allah will surely carry out His command."Budayl said, "I will convey to them what you say."He went off until he reached Quraysh and said, "We have come to you from this man, and we heard him say something. If you wish us to lay it before you, we will."The foolish among them said, "We have no need for you to tell us anything about him."But the men of judgment among them said, "Tell us what you heard him say."He said, "I heard him say such and such," and he reported to them what the Prophet ﷺ had said. Then Urwa bin Masud stood up and said, "My people, are you not as a father to me?"They said, "Yes."He said, "And am I not as a son to you?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Do you distrust me?"They said, "No."He said, "Do you not know that I called on the people of Ukaz to come to your aid, and when they held back from me I came to you with my own family and children and all who obeyed me?"They said, "Yes."He said, "This man has offered you a sound proposal. Accept it, and let me go to him."They said, "Go to him."So he went to him and began to speak with the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said much the same as he had said to Budayl. At that point Urwa said, "Muhammad, tell me, if you wipe out your own people, have you ever heard of any Arab before you who destroyed his own kin? And if the other outcome should come to pass, then by Allah, I see faces here, and I see a rabble of people who are quite likely to flee and abandon you."Abu Bakr Siddiq said to him, "Go suck the clitoris of Lat! Would we flee from him and abandon him?"Urwa asked, "Who is this?"They said, "Abu Bakr."He said, "By the One in whose hand my soul rests, were it not for a favor you once did me which I have not yet repaid, I would answer you back."He went on speaking with the Prophet ﷺ, and each time he spoke he took hold of his beard. Mughira bin Shuba was standing at the Prophet's ﷺ head with a sword, wearing a helmet, and every time Urwa reached out his hand toward the beard of the Prophet ﷺ, Mughira struck his hand with the butt of the sword's scabbard and said to him, "Take your hand away from the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Urwa raised his head and asked, "Who is this?"They said, "Mughira bin Shuba."He said, "You treacherous man! Am I not still working to repair the damage of your treachery?"Mughira had once traveled with some people in the days of ignorance, then killed them and taken their property. Afterward he came and accepted Islam, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "As for your Islam, I accept it. As for the property, I will have nothing to do with it."Then Urwa began to study the Prophet's ﷺ companions with his own eyes. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never spat but that it landed in the palm of one of them, who rubbed it over his face and skin. When he gave them an order they raced to carry it out. When he performed wudu they almost came to blows over the water left from it. When he spoke they lowered their voices in his presence, and they would not look him full in the face out of reverence for him.Urwa returned to his companions and said, "My people, by Allah, I have visited kings. I have visited Caesar, Khosrow, and the Negus, and by Allah, I have never seen a king whose companions revere him as the companions of Muhammad ﷺ revere Muhammad. By Allah, he never spits but that it lands in the palm of one of them, who rubs it over his face and skin. When he gives them an order they race to carry it out. When he performs wudu they almost come to blows over the water left from it. When he speaks they lower their voices in his presence, and they will not look him full in the face out of reverence for him. He has offered you a sound proposal, so accept it."A man from Banu Kinana said, "Let me go to him."They said, "Go to him."When he came into view of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is so-and-so. He belongs to a people who venerate sacrificial camels, so send them out where he can see them." They were sent out to him, and the people came to meet him chanting the talbiya. When he saw this he said, "Glory be to Allah! It is not right that these people should be barred from the House." And when he returned to his companions he said, "I saw the sacrificial camels garlanded and marked. I do not think they should be barred from the House."Then a man among them named Mikraz bin Hafs stood up and said, "Let me go to him."They said, "Go to him."When he came into view, the Prophet ﷺ said, "This is Mikraz, and he is a treacherous man." He began speaking with the Prophet ﷺ, and while he was speaking with him Suhayl bin Amr arrived.Muamar said, Ayub told me, on the authority of Ikrima, that when Suhayl bin Amr came the Prophet ﷺ said, "Your affair has now been made easy for you."Muamar said, Zuhri said in his account, Suhayl bin Amr came and said, "Come, let a document be drawn up between us and you."So the Prophet ﷺ called for a scribe, and the Prophet ﷺ said, "Write, In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."Suhayl said, "As for Rahman, by Allah, I do not know what that is. Write instead, In Your name, Allah, just as you used to write."The Muslims said, "By Allah, we will not write it except as, In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful."But the Prophet ﷺ said, "Write, In Your name, Allah." Then he said, "Write, This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has settled upon."Suhayl said, "By Allah, if we knew you were the Messenger of Allah we would not have barred you from the House, nor fought you. Write instead, Muhammad bin Abdullah."The Prophet ﷺ said, "By Allah, I am indeed the Messenger of Allah, even if you deny me. Write, Muhammad bin Abdullah."Zuhri said, this was because of his words, "They will not ask me for any terms in which they honor the sanctities of Allah without my granting it to them."The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "On condition that you leave the House open to us so that we may circle it."Suhayl said, "By Allah, the Arabs shall never say that we were forced into that. It will be next year instead." So it was written down. Then Suhayl said, "And on condition that no man of ours comes to you, even if he follows your religion, without your returning him to us."The Muslims said, "Glory be to Allah! How can a man be returned to the polytheists when he has come as a Muslim?"While they were in this state, Abu Jandal bin Suhayl bin Amr came in, dragging his fetters. He had escaped from the lower part of Makkah and had thrown himself down among the Muslims.Suhayl said, "Muhammad, this is the very first case I hold you to under our agreement, that you return him to me."The Prophet ﷺ said, "We have not yet completed the document."Suhayl said, "Then by Allah, I will never make peace with you on anything."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then grant him to me as an exception."Suhayl said, "I will not grant him to you."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Do it, please."Suhayl said, "I will not do it."Mikraz said, "We do grant him to you."Abu Jandal cried out, "Muslims, am I to be returned to the polytheists when I have come as a Muslim? Do you not see what I have suffered?" He had been tortured severely for the sake of Allah.Umar bin Khattab said, I went to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ and said, "Are you not truly the Prophet of Allah?"He said, "Yes."I said, "Are we not in the right and our enemy in the wrong?"He said, "Yes."I said, "Then why should we accept this humiliation in our religion?"He said, "I am the Messenger of Allah. I do not disobey Him, and He is my helper."I said, "Did you not tell us that we would come to the House and circle it?"He said, "Yes, but did I tell you that we would come to it this year?"I said, "No."He said, "You will certainly come to it and circle it."Then I went to Abu Bakr and said, "Abu Bakr, is this not truly the Prophet of Allah?"He said, "Yes."I said, "Are we not in the right and our enemy in the wrong?"He said, "Yes."I said, "Then why should we accept this humiliation in our religion?"He said, "Man, he is indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He does not disobey his Lord, and He is his helper. So hold fast to his stirrup, for by Allah, he is in the right."I said, "Did he not tell us that we would come to the House and circle it?"He said, "Yes, but did he tell you that you would come to it this year?"I said, "No."He said, "You will certainly come to it and circle it."Zuhri said, Umar said, "I performed many good deeds afterward to make up for that."When the drafting of the document was finished, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions, "Get up and slaughter your animals, then shave your heads." By Allah, not one of them stood up, even though he said this three times. When none of them stood up, he went in to Umm Salama and told her how the people had responded to him.Umm Salama said, "Prophet of Allah, do you want them to do it? Then go out and do not say a word to any of them until you have slaughtered your camel and called your barber to shave your head."So he went out and did not speak a word to any of them until he had done just that. He slaughtered his camel and called his barber, who shaved his head. When they saw this, they rose and slaughtered, and they began shaving one another's heads until they nearly killed each other in their distress. Then believing women came to him, and Allah the Exalted revealed, "You who believe, when believing women come to you as emigrants, test them" up to His words, "the marriage bonds of disbelieving women" [Mumtahina 60:10]. So Umar divorced two wives on that day whom he had married in the days of shirk. Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan married one of them, and Safwan bin Umaya the other. Then the Prophet ﷺ returned to Madinah, and Abu Baseer, a man of Quraysh who was a Muslim, came to him. Quraysh sent two men after him, and they said, "Honor the agreement you made with us." So he handed him over to the two men. They set out with him, and when they reached Dhul-Hulayfa they stopped to eat some dates they had.Abu Baseer said to one of the two men, "By Allah, I think this sword of yours is a fine one, so-and-so."The other drew it out and said, "Yes, by Allah, it is fine indeed. I have tested it again and again."Abu Baseer said, "Let me have a look at it."The man let him take it, and Abu Baseer struck him with it until he lay dead. The other fled all the way to Madinah and came running into the masjid. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him he said, "This man has seen something terrifying."When he reached the Prophet ﷺ he said, "By Allah, my companion has been killed, and I am as good as dead myself."Then Abu Baseer arrived and said, "Prophet of Allah, by Allah, Allah has fulfilled your obligation. You handed me back to them, and then Allah delivered me from them."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Woe to his mother, he is a kindler of war! If only he had someone with him."When Abu Baseer heard that, he realized the Prophet would send him back to them, so he left and made his way to the seashore.Abu Jandal bin Suhayl also escaped from them and joined Abu Baseer, and after that no man of Quraysh who accepted Islam failed to join Abu Baseer, until a whole band of them had gathered. By Allah, they never heard of a Quraysh caravan setting out for Syria without intercepting it, killing the men and seizing their goods. So Quraysh sent word to the Prophet ﷺ, imploring him by Allah and by the bond of kinship to send for these men, and saying that whoever came to him would be safe. So the Prophet ﷺ sent for them, and Allah the Exalted revealed, "And it is He who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them within Makkah, after He had given you victory over them" up to His words, "the zeal, the zeal of ignorance" [Fath 48:24–26].Their zeal consisted in this, that they refused to acknowledge that he was the Prophet of Allah, refused the words "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful," and stood between the Muslims and the House.Abu Abdullah said, "maarra" comes from "urr," which means mange. "Tazayyalu" means to separate from one another. "Hamaytu al-qawm" means I defended the people, and the noun is "himaya." "Ahmaytu al-hima" means I made the pasture a protected reserve that may not be entered. "Ahmaytu al-hadid" means I heated the iron. And "ahmaytu al-rajul" means I made the man angry, the noun being "ihma."
