He used to relate that he had a dispute with a man from the Ansar, who had taken part in Badr, before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning streams of water from the Harra with which they both used to irrigate their land. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Zubayr, "Irrigate, Zubayr, then let the water flow to your neighbor."The Ansari became angry and said, "Messenger of Allah, is it because he is the son of your aunt?"The face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ changed color, then he said, "Irrigate, Zubayr, then hold back the water until it reaches the walls."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ thereby gave Zubayr his full right. Before that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had suggested to Zubayr a course of action that would have been generous to him and to the Ansari, but when the Ansari angered the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he gave Zubayr his full right by an explicit ruling.Urwa said, Zubayr said, "By Allah, I do not think this verse was revealed except concerning that incident, 'But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge concerning that which has arisen between them'" [Nisa 4:65].
