By Allah, Hasan bin Ali confronted Muawiya with battalions like mountains.Amr bin As said, "I see battalions that will not turn back until they kill their counterparts."Muawiya, who was by Allah the better of the two men, replied to him, "Amr, if these kill those and those kill these, who will take care of the people's affairs for me? Who will look after their women? Who will look after their estates?"So he sent to Hasan two men from the Quraysh, from Banu Abd Shams, namely Abdul-Rahman bin Samura and Abdullah bin Amir bin Kurayz, saying, "Go to this man and present this offer to him, speak with him, and seek terms with him."The two men went to Hasan, entered upon him, spoke with him, conveyed the message, and sought terms.Hasan bin Ali said to them, "We are the sons of Abdul-Muttalib. We have already obtained some of this wealth, and this nation has wreaked havoc with its bloodshed."They said, "He offers you such-and-such, and seeks this from you, and asks you for that."He asked, "Who will guarantee this for me?"They said, "We will guarantee it for you."He did not ask them about anything except that they said, "We will guarantee it for you." So he made peace with him.Hasan said, "I heard Abu Bakra say, 'I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the pulpit with Hasan bin Ali at his side. He would turn toward the people once and toward Hasan another time, saying, "This son of mine is a master, and perhaps Allah will reconcile through him two great factions of the Muslims."'"Abu Abdullah said, "Ali bin Abdullah said to me, 'It is only through this hadith that Hasan's hearing from Abu Bakra is established for us.'"
Bukhari included the hadiths of Hasan narrated from Abu Bakra, among them, the hadith on the eclipse, the hadith "may Allah increase your eagerness, but do not do it again," the hadith "a people will not succeed who entrust their affairs to a woman," and the hadith "this son of mine is a master." Hasan is only narrated from Ahnaf from Abu Bakra.
He said on page 127, volume 2 of the introduction to Fath al-Bari, concerning the hadith, "This son of mine is a leader," I say, the hadith has been reported from Hasan through several routes, and Bukhari relied only on the report of Abu Musa from Hasan that he heard Abu Bakra. He reported it at length in the Book of Reconciliation, and said at the end of it, Ali bin Abdullah said to me, "What is established with us is that Hasan heard this hadith from Abu Bakra." Daraqutni turned away from criticizing it on the grounds of disagreement about Hasan, for it was reported from him in this manner, and it was also reported from him from Umm Salama, and it was reported from the Prophet, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him and his family, as a mursal report, because the chains for that are not strong.I have long been puzzled by Daraqutni's firm assertion that Hasan did not hear from Abu Bakra, given that in this very hadith in Bukhari, Hasan says, "I heard Abu Bakra say..." until I saw, in the biographical dictionary of Bukhari's narrators by Abu Walid Baji, in the beginning of the letter ha, an entry for Hasan bin Ali bin Abu Talib, in which he said that Bukhari recorded Hasan's statement, "I heard Abu Bakra." So Abu Hasan Daraqutni interpreted it as referring to this Hasan (Hasan bin Ali bin Abu Talib), because Hasan (Hasan Basri), according to them, did not hear from Abu Bakra, whereas Bukhari and Ibn Madini took it as referring to Hasan Basri, and this, in their view, was correct, that he did hear from him.
I say, I have mentioned this in astonishment at it, for I have not seen it attributed to anyone other than Baji, and it is an interpretation that contradicts the apparent meaning without any basis. Moreover, the narrator of this hadith in Bukhari, from Hasan, did not actually meet Hasan bin Ali, so a break in the chain necessarily follows. Thus the very disconnection that Baji sought to avoid, namely between Hasan Basri and Abu Bakra, has occurred instead between Hasan bin Ali and the one narrating from him. Whoever examines its wording in Bukhari will recognize the weakness of this interpretation. And Allah knows best.As for his argument that Bukhari narrated this hadith through another route, saying in it, "from Hasan, from Ahnaf, from Abu Bakra," there is no contradiction between the two chains, because his narration from Ahnaf, from Abu Bakra contains a clear addition not included in his hadith from Abu Bakra, and this is evident from comparing the two wordings. And Allah grants success. End.
