It was said to the Prophet ﷺ, "If only you would go to Abdullah bin Ubayy." So the Prophet ﷺ set out to him, riding a donkey, and the Muslims walked along with him through salty, barren ground.When the Prophet ﷺ reached him, Abdullah said, "Get away from me. By Allah, the stench of your donkey has offended me."A man from the Ansar who was present replied, "By Allah, the donkey of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smells better than you."Then a man from Abdullah's own people grew angry on his behalf and insulted the Ansari, and the companions of each man became angry for their friend, until a fight broke out between them with palm branches, fists, and sandals.We were told that it was concerning this incident that the verse was revealed, "And if two parties among the believers fall into fighting, then make peace between them" [Hujurat 49:9].
حدثنا مسدد حدثنا معتمر قال سمعت أبي أن
قيل للنبي ﷺ لو أتيت عبد الله بن أبي فانطلق إليه النبي ﷺ وركب حمارا فانطلق المسلمون يمشون معه وهي أرض سبخة فلما أتاه النبي ﷺ فقال إليك عني والله لقد آذاني نتن حمارك فقال رجل من الأنصار منهم والله لحمار رسول الله ﷺ أطيب ريحا منك فغضب لعبد الله رجل من قومه فشتمه فغضب لكل واحد منهما أصحابه فكان بينهما ضرب بالجريد والأيدي والنعال فبلغنا أنها أنزلت {وإن طائفتان من المؤمنين اقتتلوا فأصلحوا بينهما}
